The essay analyses the research carried out by some members of Accademia dei Lincei on lapides figurati, namely Fabio Colonna animal fossils, and Federico Cesi Francesco Stelluti plant fossils; aim is to show role played in establishing during second half seventeenth century opposite poles debate one hand as chronological indices a past world and, other, sudden outcome vis vegetativa.
